General Description  This course is an introduction to the analysis of the causes and character of international conflict and cooperation. The course begins with a foundational review of the different levels at which states  interact and the primary theoretical paradigms in the field. A special focus will be on the concept of rationality, which is a central idea in international relations, politics, law and moral and political philosophy. The demands of rationality have been formulated in different ways, in international realations, in in classical and contemporary economics,philosophical analysis of practical reason, and in legal theory including law and economics. This course will provide a critical examination of the different ways of characterizing rationality and its requirements. It will especially focus on the role of rationality in international relations and bargaining. Goals and Objectives  This course is to provide the students 1) an in dept analysis of rationality in negotiations 2) afamiliarity with various theoretical and practical aspects of international bargaining, and 3) an understanding about how to communicate ideas and arguments logically and convincingly about the rationality in in international relations, politics, economics and law.

【講師紹介】
Hartmut Lenz
Professor,Faculty of International Liberal Art  Hartmut Lenz is a Director of the Global Governance Center (GGC) at Soka University and a Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of International Liberal Arts and the Graduate School of International Peace Studies. During the 2022/23 academic year, he was a research scholar at Harvard University's Center for European Studies. He has previously held academic positions at the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics, following a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard. His research focuses on intergovernmental negotiations, conflict and cooperation. He is widely published and has received many research grants including two Kakheni Grants. 著書:There is no course book, all readings will be provided via the portal side. However, an important book used in many classes is: Amartya Sen (2002) Rationality and Freedom. Harvard University Press.
