Poverty and Development
〜Development Economics-Theory and Practice〜

講座番号: 04-12

< 講座概要 >
Over the last 60 years, many countries have achieved rapid income growth, reduction of extreme poverty and rising satisfaction of basic needs. However, we have also seen continuing failures of growth and development. Half of humanity still live below the US$2.5/day international poverty line. Defeating ""seven horsemen of underdevelopment""- lack of income growth, material poverty and hunger, vulnerability to shocks, inequality, and inequity, the low satisfaction of basic needs in health and education, lack of environmental sustainability, and a poor quality of life- is the most urgent and crucial world challenges. Learning to think development and to translate development ideas into practice is the objective of this course. In thinking development, we need to understand history, current diagnostics, growth and development theories, causal empirical analyses of past exercises and present attempts. Bringing these together in a consistent body of thought and identifying effective instruments for development is the purpose of this course. Goals 1.To understand the main dimensions and challenges of economic development and the role of development economics. 2.To understand the historical transitions of economic development 3.To understand the different school of thought in development economics 4.To understand the standard growth model such as Harrod-Domer model, the Solow model, the Lewis classical model and Lele-Mellor model. 5.To understand how the poor live and identify the several interventions for poverty-reduction. 6.To understand the various types of financial services invented for the poor. 7.To understand the social-assistance programs and targeting to reduce chnronic poverty. 8. To understand the importance of role of effective cooperation to avoid the tragedy of commons that characterizes open-access resources. 9.To understand the a micro-macro paradox in the effectiveness of foreign aid. 10.To understand the importance of institution for development, contributing to explanations for its success and failures. 11.To understand the role of state in development to complement those of the market and civil society. ※講義はすべて英語で行います。
