【2024年度秋学期】
The language of international liberal arts (国際教養の言葉) is not confined to the narrow meaning of languages, such as Japanese, English, or French. It is a language that fosters understanding and communication among humanity. It speaks in many voices and enables people in different fields and cultures to find a common language for discussion and understanding. It is complex but not exclusive, and it aims at connecting our minds across borders and nationalities to build something larger and more meaningful than what a single specialized language can accomplish.
In this course, we will examine essays, visual culture (art and film), literature, documentary, and news stories to see how the language of liberal arts allows us to communicate with each other across borders, cultures, time, and specializations. All reading and visual materials will be available in English and Japanese. In class, lectures and discussion will be primarily in English with some references and explanation in Japanese when necessary. Students are encouraged to develop an interest in exploring reading and visual materials in the liberal arts and take the challenge to express and communicate thoughts and ideas in English. Discussion topics will include the meaning of work and the questions of identity, gender, family, and peace.
